Kawasaki KZ650,  1989 model.  ”79”

VMH- Vilnius Moto House has another project – Kawasaki KZ650 „79“.

At the begining after celebration of new year (2015) VMH mechanics and designers started working on another project. Winter is a perfect season for projects engine repairing, painting and so on.

Suddenly my phone started to ring: “Hey, I’ve got your phone number  as I know you construct “Cafe Racers”. I conducted everything with it and after a week he delivered not completely old 1993  Kawasaki KZ650. It wasn’t just an ordinary bike, someone had already had tried something. It looked like a bobber. Some of the parts were completely new, even a fuel tank was taken from a HD Sportster. The main thing owner wanted is that he needs a two seated bike but in Cafe Racer style. Rear frame part was completely wasted, welded but why?!?! Only God could know… Original speedometer show 18000 km nad it looked most likely truth. Engine on the one hand looked quite dirty, rusty but on the other hand he worked really well.

Firstly from a motorcycle we have reduced some of those heavy parts which were fitted by manufacture. Than in a hand comes grinder where my mechanic Gediminas removes rear of the frame which was really ugly, than we take 22mm tube, we flex it and weld it. Few days later we managed to fit long shocks from a ATV, later we knew it wasn’t such a good idea. In hand comes a plastic which one we fitted perfectly on a bike to make basic for long seat. As owner said before project he want a cushion which must brown color so for a help here come STL crew member. Now we found one bad thing front end is much higher than a rear one. Some pity work on measuring, welding etc and here we now got 50mm lower front end. Now we got an impression that weight balance is much more centered than before and now bike feels lighter. Now comes electricity turn, KZ now got a new headlight, turn signals were fitted on a clip on steering. As always battery is lowered near engine and rear chassis. All big conjuctions are removed and changed to much smaller. Exhaust systems, we used half of the old one muffler but changed a bit on our own. Now it got a beast sound.

Picking out. First thing that comes in every person mind when starting a project: “What color to choose?”. We once again met Ricardas and started not one day discussion about the project and a color of bike. I’ve picked a color for wheels (gold) I’ve thought it would be great looking, because whole bike will be painted in ivory color. When I came to a painter and sow how these colors really look it really pissed me off. It looked awful, while other parts have been painting, I thought maybe I should try to change wheel color to a black while still I have some time. On fuel tank I painted Ricardas picked number  ”79″. When starting to put in all parts back together Ricardas, Gedas and I thought it wasn’t such a bad idea and it looks quite fascinating.

While setting up the bike. I’ve thought it could be a great idea to compete in a “Rising Thunder Custom Bike Show 2015″. Driving to this event was really rocky and I mean it because of those ATV shocks I’ve mentioned before. Every hole I hit in the gravel I feel it with my bones and even teeth. Ricardas said that after 10 km his guts were inside out. At this show our bike took the “Best CafeRacer” award. To improve rear shocks absorber we change it to much better Progressive Shock from HD Sportster.
